The Spanish program at Butler features a hands-on approach including immersive study abroad programs, service-learning in the Indianapolis community, and internships in both the United States and abroad. Students obtain the experiences necessary to improve language fluency and expand understanding of numerous cultures found throughout the world. Over 400 million people speak Spanish worldwide. Here at home, Spanish is the second-most-spoken language in the United States, touching all facets of our culture from media to education to business.

Curriculum

The Department of Modern Languages, Literatures, and Cultures offers you a hands-on Spanish major and minor that include immersive study abroad programs. Sample courses in this program include:

  • SP 306 Spanish in the Workplace
  • SP 315 Spanish for Business
  • SP 316 Spanish for Travel and Tourism
  • SP 326 Videogame Development in Spain
  • SP 330 Themes in Hispanic Studies
  • SP 465 Bilingualism in the Hispanic World

The Butler Advantage

In Butler’s Spanish program, you’ll obtain the experiences necessary to improve language fluency while expanding your understanding of cultures different from your own.

Central Indiana boasts a rich Latino community, in which students interact in social and service learning capacities.

Students may serve as Spanish-speaking teacher aides in Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) classrooms.

Study abroad programs include faculty-led programs to Alcalá de Henares, Spain, and Costa Rica.

Butler has an active, on-campus Latinos Unidos student group.
