French is a language spoken on five continents—one of the main languages of international business, sport, and diplomacy. There are also a wide range of study abroad opportunities not only in France, but also in Belgium, French Guiana, Madagascar, Morocco, Québec, Senegal, and Switzerland. In addition, there are a plethora of opportunities to complete internships in the United States and abroad, scholarships, and opportunities to present research both on- and off-campus.

Studying English at Butler provides four academic tracks: Literature; Creative Writing; Public and Professional Writing; and Literary Theory, Culture, and Criticism. It enjoys a distinguished history and contemporary relevance through our faculty’s significant national publications in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, and scholarship. Classics

Students enjoy an intensive, hands-on curriculum, encouraging them to supplement their departmental studies with work in other disciplines. Real engagement with the ancient world through study abroad in the very environments that inspired the ancient Greeks and Romans creates an individualized education like no other. Chinese

Explore spoken Mandarin and simplified Chinese characters comprehensively–along with the rich cultures, peoples, and business climate of China. Led by native speakers, Butler’s Chinese program supports interdisciplinary study with other departments, including International Studies, History and Anthropology, Communication, Business, Pharmacy, and more. This program affords you every degree of immersion necessary to increase linguistic and cultural fluency, preparing you for today’s globalized marketplace and continued language studies post-graduation.
