Performance and Music Education

This five year program leads to a double major in performance and music education, with P-12 certification in either choral/general music or instrumental/general music. You can also choose from vocal, piano, or instrumental performance, allowing you to customize the program to fit your own interests and talents. Graduates of this program are uniquely positioned to both perform and to teach.

Musical Arts

The Bachelor of Musical Arts degree is perfect for music students who want to emphasize in a variety of subjects, ranging from jazz studies, composition, music history, music theory, music performance, or piano pedagogy. This program allows for more flexibility in course load while still providing opportunities for performance, experiential learning, and mentorship with exceptional faculty.

Music Therapy Dual Degree

Through the Music Therapy Dual Degree program, you can earn either a Bachelor of Arts in Music or a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Butler and a degree in Music Therapy from our program partner, IUPUI. Depending on your chosen Butler major, this program will take either five or six years to complete, and will prepare you for a wide range of careers, whether as a music educator, a music therapist, a performer, or something else.

Music Performance

Music Performance students choose from concentrations in instrumental, piano, and vocal performance. You will have ample opportunities for performing in world-class venues and will take a diverse array of courses including music theory, aural skills, and basic conducting. You’ll create alongside exceptional faculty and have noteworthy opportunities to perform, study abroad, and interact with local arts professionals. While many graduates of the Music Performance program do pursue graduate school, you will be uniquely positioned to pursue a number of pathways of your choosing.

Music Education

Butler’s Music Education major will prepare you for P-12 certification in choral/general music or instrumental/general music. With early, frequent, and diverse opportunities for field experience–including two eight-week phases of student teaching–as well as opportunities to work with numerous Indianapolis arts organizations like the Indianapolis Children’s Choir and Music For All, you will be prepared with the experience you need. Paired with a flexible curriculum and diverse performance opportunities, graduates are uniquely positioned to teach the next generation of music students.

Music Composition

Music Composition students enjoy a diverse curriculum, with courses that include orchestration, electronic music, music theory, basic conducting, and more. You will learn through one-on-one experiences with world-renowned faculty who love to perform, compose, and publish. Graduates of the Music Composition program typically pursue graduate school for an advanced degree to eventually become a composer, teacher, scholar, or practitioner of music theory and composition.

As a Music major, you will have access to world-class performance facilities and diverse ensembles such as the Butler Symphony Orchestra, Butler University Chorale, Jazz Ensembles, and more. You’ll be mentored by faculty who are renowned performers and scholars, while engaging in a flexible curriculum that gives you the freedom to customize your college experience. You can expect to collaborate with internationally acclaimed artists, complete a major research project, or even teach in the Butler Community Arts School, giving you noteworthy opportunities for a well-rounded education.

Jazz Studies

As a Jazz Studies major, you will receive high-quality ensemble experiences and numerous performing opportunities in the heart of one of America’s greatest jazz cities–Indianapolis. Our jazz ensembles and jazz combos provide opportunities for you to hone your skills in both traditional and modern repertoire, as well as improvisation. You will have extensive contact with our jazz faculty, which consists of nationally-renowned performers, scholars, and educators. The dynamic curriculum is representative of today’s freelance jazz musician, with coursework in improvisation, jazz theory, history, and arranging, applied jazz lessons, and entrepreneurship and career development.
