Creative Media and Entertainment

Creative Media and Entertainment will provide you with up-to-date conceptual and practical skills in digital media technologies, aesthetics, and industries. You’ll study how experienced decision-makers and media producers create and distribute media to engage audiences and then develop your own content from pre-production planning to finished communication product. You’ll develop a passion for storytelling with the tools to design and produce content for television, film, video, online, and interactive media.

Theatre

As a Theatre major, you will learn from a broad study of theatre, meant to diversity your skills as well as provide an in-depth study of specialized interests. You can expect to work on productions of all sorts, including Shakespeare, devised work, new plays, musicals, comedy, and more. You’ll perform in a variety of spaces including the 2,200-seat Clowes Memorial Hall to the 450-seat Schrott Center for the Arts to the flexible 100-seat Lilly Hall Studio Theatre. You can also choose an emphasis in acting, costume design, directing, music theatre, set and lighting design, or stage management, setting you up for success for life as a working artist.

Musical Arts

The Bachelor of Musical Arts degree is perfect for music students who want to emphasize in a variety of subjects, ranging from jazz studies, composition, music history, music theory, music performance, or piano pedagogy. This program allows for more flexibility in course load while still providing opportunities for performance, experiential learning, and mentorship with exceptional faculty.

Music Performance

Music Performance students choose from concentrations in instrumental, piano, and vocal performance. You will have ample opportunities for performing in world-class venues and will take a diverse array of courses including music theory, aural skills, and basic conducting. Music Composition

Music Composition students enjoy a diverse curriculum, with courses that include orchestration, electronic music, music theory, basic conducting, and more. You will learn through one-on-one experiences with world-renowned faculty who love to perform, compose, and publish. Graduates of the Music Composition program typically pursue graduate school for an advanced degree to eventually become a composer, teacher, scholar, or practitioner of music theory and composition.

Jazz Studies

As a Jazz Studies major, you will receive high-quality ensemble experiences and numerous performing opportunities in the heart of one of America’s greatest jazz cities–Indianapolis. Our jazz ensembles and jazz combos provide opportunities for you to hone your skills in both traditional and modern repertoire, as well as improvisation. You will have extensive contact with our jazz faculty, which consists of nationally-renowned performers, scholars, and educators. The dynamic curriculum is representative of today’s freelance jazz musician, with coursework in improvisation, jazz theory, history, and arranging, applied jazz lessons, and entrepreneurship and career development.

Dance—Performance

As one of very few universities to offer a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance Performance, this program provides a rich and nourishing environment for the highest caliber of dancers in the nation. Consistently recognized as one of the top five classical dance programs in the country, you’ll receive conservatory-level instruction from a faculty of highly respected artists and teachers. The Dance—Pedagogy major prepares students for a career as a private dance teacher. The curriculum has a balanced combination of courses in dance, education, and the liberal arts. Combining coursework in business, journalism, communication, and non-profit management with training in Butler’s prestigious Department of Dance, students studying Dance Arts Administration will receive conservatory-level instruction from a faculty of highly respected artists and teachers. In addition to top-notch dance training, you will also complete at least one internship, preparing you for a career in performance or leadership in the arts.
