Butler’s Mathematics major follows the Committee for Undergraduate Program in Mathematics guidelines—one of the few undergraduate programs to do so. The Department of Mathematics and Actuarial Sciences provides students with a close-knit departmental body, collaborative research, and opportunities to travel to conferences and problem-solving competitions. Computer Science

Butler’s Computer Science major blends academic coursework with research, internship, and service opportunities to prepare students for graduate school and the working world. The Computer Science and Software Engineering Department offers access to the Big Dawg supercomputer, networking lunches and programming contests, and the unique opportunity to create software for nonprofit organizations through participation in our Engineering Projects in Community Service (EPICS) program. With the small class sizes of a liberal arts school and the rigorous, well-rounded curriculum and premier resources of a dedicated tech school, students have all the advantages they need to excel.

Chemistry

Biology

Butler’s Department of Biological Sciences will prepare you to excel as a broadly-trained scientist, capable of thriving in multiple fields. Butler Biology alumni have careers in healthcare, pharmaceuticals, biological and medical research, business, law, education, government, and biotechnology, just to name a few. Astronomy and Astrophysics

The Astronomy and Astrophysics major combines traditional coursework with hands-on experience in a curriculum that emphasizes practical application and academic excellence. Students have access to world-class research facilities and equipment, including remote access to telescopes around the world, access to the fully automated 1-meter telescope at the Holcomb Observatory and Planetarium, and use of our on-campus supercomputer, Big Dawg. Many students present their research at the annual meeting of the American Astronomical Society. With paid departmental research opportunities and a high placement rate to research positions and internships, Butler’s Astronomy and Astrophysics major helps students take their knowledge out of the classroom and into the world—and beyond.

Actuarial Science

Peace and Conflict Studies

In this program, you will learn the nature and dynamics of violent conflict and the conditions and practice of peace, from the local to the global level. You will explore the causes of violence—including structural, political, economic, cultural, and environmental injustices, human rights violations, and physical harm—and you’ll develop the skills necessary to build peace through everyday practices, nonviolent direct action, activism, conflict resolution, diplomacy, and policy change. This major includes a strong core of Political Science courses, supported by offerings in Anthropology, English, Entrepreneurship and Innovation, History, Journalism, Organizational Communication and Leadership, Philosophy, Religion, Sociology, and Spanish.

International Studies

Butler’s International Studies program supplements a political science component with the study of economics and culture. Combining a core curriculum with interdisciplinary freedom that cuts across traditional barriers, along with hands-on experience, you can steer your degree in any direction you please. Choices of interdisciplinary courses can be adapted to cultivate a degree that pursues a deeper understanding of the world as a whole.
