An undergraduate degree in Spanish features a hands-on approach including immersive study abroad programs, service-learning in the Indianapolis community, and internships in both the United States and abroad. Students obtain the experiences necessary to improve language fluency and expand understanding of numerous cultures found throughout the world. Over 400 million people speak Spanish worldwide. Here at home, Spanish is the second-most-spoken language in the United States, touching all facets of our culture from media to education to business.
Multilingual majors study three or more languages, as well as the countries and cultures in which those languages are spoken. Department faculty teach Chinese, French, German, and Spanish, and will help you develop your language skills, while guiding you through scholarly investigations in topics relevant to our shared disciplines, including: linguistics, literatures, cinema, contemporary culture, and peoples from around the world. Butler’s Multilingual program transcends the typical mono- or bilingual education found at other universities, providing you an academic home in a department that values and encourages in-depth study of multiple languages.
Studying German provides the linguistic fluency and cultural competence needed for a broad range of professions and post-graduate educational opportunities in today’s globalized world. Learning German primes students for success on a local and international level in business, science, and the humanities. Students also enjoy small classes—providing individualized attention and close interaction with dedicated, accessible, internationally active scholars—along with use of Butler’s student Modern Language Center and its wealth of movies, technology, tutoring, and lounge areas.
Small class sizes and a faculty of nationally and internationally active scholars give you a remarkably personalized educational experience. French is a language spoken on five continents—one of the main languages of international business, sport, and diplomacy. There are also a wide range of study abroad opportunities not only in France, but also in Belgium, French Guiana, Madagascar, Morocco, Québec, Senegal, and Switzerland. In addition, there are a plethora of opportunities to complete internships in the United States and abroad, scholarships, and opportunities to present research both on- and off-campus.
Explore spoken Mandarin and simplified Chinese characters comprehensively–along with the rich cultures, peoples, and business climate of China.
